The settle comprises a high back, straight moulded top rail, decorated with a box-shaped carved border below, encompassing two large panels which feature carved folk art country scene depicting dancing characters, and a row of lunettes carvings below. Joining the back and seat are arms decorated with trailing foliate carvings, which transcend down onto sweeping armrests, decorated with carved lion heads.
The moulded panelled seat lifts up to reveal a large storage area, which is ideal for storing shoes and boots in the hallway! Below the seat, the front of the settle displays two finely carved “Green Man” face panels, flanked by seeping carved foliate scroll work. Decorative fan-shaped carved panels are visible on the sides of the settle. The settle rests on its original moulded plinth and block feet.

History of Antique Settles:
An antique settle is a wooden bench, usually with arms and a high back, long enough to accommodate three or four sitters. Settles are commonly movable, but occasionally fixed. The settle shares with the chest and the chair the distinction of great antiquity. Its high back was a protection from the draughts of medieval buildings, protection which was sometimes increased by the addition of winged ends or a wooden canopy. It was most frequently placed near the fire in the common sitting-room. Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Settle_(furniture)
