Description:
Here is a fine quality Victorian oak buffet sideboard, also known as a buffet server, constructed from solid oak, decorated with fine quality Green Man carvings, circa 1880, in excellent original condition. The Victorian oak buffet sideboard is constructed with two tiers, which incorporates two working drawers below a lower shelf, and two cupboard doors below, incorporating storage shelves and a pull-out drawer tray to the right-hand side. The Victorian oak buffet sideboard boasts fine quality leaf, fruit and scroll carvings, interspersed with Green Man face carvings to the mouldings, frame, drawer fronts and door panels. Green Man carvings acted as a symbol of rebirth, representing the cycle of new growth that occurs every spring, and held great influence in architecture and design during the Victorian period. The Green Man face carvings act as drawer handles to the top two drawers, flanked by scroll carvings. The drawers are oak lined and are constructed with hand-dovetailed joints. The two-tiers are supported by tapering fluted columns at the front, with carved scalloped rectangular supports to the rear. The lower section comprises two cupboard doors, also carved with Green Man face carvings encompassed by scroll carvings and a bobbin moulded frame. The two doors are flanked by fine carved columns comprising further Green Man face carvings within a trail of floral leaves. Th doors open to reveal a shelf on the left-hand side and a pull-out drawer on the right-hand side. The right-hand drawer retains its original working lever lock, with working key. The Victorian oak buffet sideboard terminates on a carved moulded breakfront plinth base.
The Victorian oak buffet boasts a superb rich red-brown mahogany colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received (it cannot be recreated by re-polishing).
The Victorian oak buffet would look superb in any hallway or dining room. This item would certainly grace any home and is a great investment as it is extremely functional. So, don’t miss out on your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture.
History of Green Man:
The Green Man is a legendary being primarily interpreted as a symbol of rebirth, representing the cycle of new growth that occurs every spring. The Green Man is most commonly depicted in a sculpture, or other representation of a face which is made of, or completely surrounded by, leaves. The Green Man motif has many variations. Branches or vines may sprout from the mouth, nostrils, or other parts of the face, and these shoots may bear flowers or fruit. Found in many cultures from many ages around the world, the Green Man is often related to natural vegetation deities. Often used as decorative architectural ornaments, Green Men are frequently found in carvings on both secular and ecclesiastical buildings. “The Green Man” is also a popular name for English public houses, and various interpretations of the name appear on inn signs, which sometimes show a full figure rather than just the face (source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green_Man#:~:text=The%20Green%20Man%20is%20a,or%20completely%20surrounded%20by%2C%20leaves).
