Description:
This is a fine quality antique English Victorian Rococo carved mahogany & brass adjustable music stand, circa 1860, in good original condition. The music stand features a single book rest panel, boasting stunning quality carved pierced floral panel, with the original brass page holders on the bookrest. The height of the music stand is adjusted by turning the large bulbous wooden screw at the top of the centre column. The angle of the music stand can be adjusted according to the user’s preference, by adjusting the brass screw behind the bookrest. The panel folds flat for storage and transportation. Below, the stand features a turned carved column support and includes the original brass height adjustment mechanism. Loosening the large bulbous wooden knob at the top of the wooden column, raising or lowering the top to the desired height, then tightening the knob can adjust the height. The stand rests on a splayed tripod carved base, terminating on its original scroll pad feet.
The music stand exhibits a rich dark brown colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.
This music stand would compliment any home, especially the office or study. It would certainly grace any home and is a great investment as it is extremely functional. So don’t miss out on your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture.

Provenance – Rococo:
Rococo was an 18th-century artistic movement and style, which affected several aspects of the arts including painting, sculpture, architecture, interior design, decoration, literature, music and theatre. It takes its name from the French rocaille (pronounced ‘rock-eye’), which means the rock or broken shell motifs that often formed part of the designs. The Rococo developed in the early part of the 18th century in Paris, France as a reaction against the grandeur symmetry and strict regulations of the Baroque, especially that of the Palace of Versailles. The Rococo style was used primarily in furniture, silver and ceramics, rather than architecture.
Condition Report:
This antique music stand is in good original condition. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges but nothing significant considering the age of the item. The book rests are completely original, retaining all their brass book holders, and there are no missing struts. The stand boasts the original working brass height adjustment mechanism. The column and base are solid and the feet are original. Steel brackets have been added to the back of the bookrest base a long time ago (possibly when it was made), to strengthen the pierced panel (see photos). The stand has a lovely warm colour and patination. This music stand is well constructed, solid in joint, sits firm on the ground and is ready to use.
