Description:
This is a fine quality antique Victorian rosewood upholstered Canterbury box stool, newly upholstered to a professional standard, circa 1870, in excellent condition. The stool has been newly upholstered with padded structured cotton seat, finished with brass studs. The seat is hinged and opens to reveal a spacious interior, with a central spindled divider – ideal for storing sheet music or magazine. The original hinges to the lid are strong and in good condition. The stool retains its original working brass lock, with key and is decorated with its original mother of pearl key escutcheon. The exterior is decorated with stunning intricately carved open fretwork panels to the front, back and sides, which are finished with fine beading. Associated structed cotton material sits behind the open carved fretwork panels and each corner is decorated with elegant barley twist columns. The box stool stands on its original turned feet, incorporating its original solid brass cup castors. Originally designed as a Canterbury box stool, it would be ideal for use as a piano stool, dressing stool or additional seat in the living room.

This box stool is in excellent condition having been newly upholstered to a professional standard. Therefore, the upholstery is new and free from damage, rips, and marks. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges but nothing significant considering the age of the item. The original hinges to the lid are strong and in good condition and the stool retains its original working brass lever lock, with key and elegant mother of pearl key escutcheon. The ottoman stands on its original turned feet, with the original solid brass castors, which are in good condition. This item is well constructed, solid in joint and ready to use.
