Description:
Here is a fine quality antique English William IV rosewood rectangular worktable incorporating a chess game board and sewing box, circa 1830, in good original condition. The top boasts a rosewood and birds eye maple inlaid chessboard. The perimeter of the tabletop features a stunning rosewood grain configuration with a fine moulded edge. The tabletop can be rotated through 90° to reveal a shallow storage space. Once in this position, the tabletop can then be unfolded on the original brass hinges, to double the size of the tabletop area. Below, is a single working mahogany lined and hand-dovetailed drawer, which boasts the original red paper lining and is sectioned into small compartments; designed for storing sewing reels, and needles. In addition, the drawer retains its original working lock, including a working key and original turned knobs. Further below is a pull-out sewing basket, which boasts a buff colour satin pleated outer lining. The sewing basket also features a working lock and its own key. The inside of the sewing basket is lined with red fabric incorporating fleur-de-lis motifs. Underneath, the top of the sewing table is supported by a stunning “U” shape central pedestal support. Further below, the central pedestal terminates on a bulbous up-turned scroll collar above a circular base, which is connected to four short up-turned scroll carved feet on the original castors.
