Description:
This is an attractive and superb quality antique French provincial carved oak rectangular desk / library table, circa 1870, in good original condition. The top of the desk table features stunning wide oak plank top within a boarded mitered frame, finished with a decorative floral thumb moulding. Below, there are two large intricately carved grape vine moulded drawers, enriched by punch work on a sunken matted background, with original brass swan neck handles, flanked by floral carved panels. There are similar carvings on the frieze to the sides and back of the desk, enabling the desk to be freestanding in the centre of a room. The large drawers are oak lined and constructed with hand dovetail joints. The table is raised on four barley twist legs, which are united by twin turned stretchers and a central barley twist stretcher on turned feet. The stretchers incorporate block sections at intervals, with fine floral carving, and a central finial.
This period table is large enough to be used as a desk or a large side / console table. It would look ideal in either a traditional or contemporary setting.
The table boasts a rich brown oak colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.
This item would compliment any home or office. So, don’t miss out on your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture!
