Description:
This is a fine quality set of six antique French Louis XV style carved solid cherry wood rush seat ladder-back dining chairs, exhibiting exceptional colour, from the 2nd Empire period, circa 1870 – 1890, in excellent condition. Boasting scribe moulded backs, frames and legs, the chairs feature a shaped top rail and two further shaped rails below, in the form of a ladder back design within the shaped upright supports; the chairs feature rush woven seats, all of which are in good condition. The chairs also display scribe carving to the seat frame corners. The seats are raised on fine cabriole legs with foliate carved feet to the front, with sabre legs to the rear, all of which are united by “H” stretchers for added strength and stability. The side stretchers are also shaped. The chairs are heavy in weight, which is a good sign of fine quality and it means they are sturdy.
The chairs feature a rich, warm brown colour. As they boast the original polish, they have a lovely colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and the years of care and cleaning they have received.
These rush seated chairs would look superb in a variety of rooms, especially the kitchen or dining room. They would certainly grace any home in either a contemporary or traditional setting; they are a great investment, as they are an extremely functional item. So, don’t miss out on your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture.
Condition Report:
These antique rush seat ladder back dining chairs are in excellent condition. This is a true set of chairs; they have not been matched together from smaller sets of chairs, which is sometimes the case. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges but nothing significant considering the age of the item. There is a historical repair to the top left corner of the back of one chair (see photos), however, the structural strength of the chair has not been reduced. The chairs feature rush woven seats, which are in very good condition, only showing nominal signs of age. The chairs have been glued and French polished by hand, to a professional standard, in our workshop, therefore, they boast a fantastic patination and warm colour. The chairs are heavy in weight, which is a good sign of quality and it means they are solid in solid in joint; they do not wobble and are ready to use.
