Here is a very good quality antique George V three-piece mahogany bergere cane suite, circa 1920, made and stamped by Staples & Co. (by appointment to the King), in excellent condition. Having a rectangular design to the frame of the suite, with a wider gentlemen’s armchair and a narrower ladies’ armchair, along with a three set couch, makes this a superior example of a bergere suite, in terms of provenance, design and quality, compared to other standard sized armchair bergere suites that you see in the market place today.
The arched frame is constructed of top quality solid mahogany, which features acanthus leaf carvings to the scroll arms, with Chinese Chippendale blind fretwork carving to the lower section of the frame, specifically the frieze and block legs. Decorative Chinese Chippendale open fretwork spandrels sit between the legs and frieze. The suite features the original double panel cane-work to the sides of the arms and single panel cane work to the back. Double panel cane suites are better quality than suites that just feature single cane wall throughout. The suite is of good seat height; it does not sit too low, like other bergere suites you see in the market place.
The suite has been newly upholstered in top quality hardwearing wool and cotton structured biscuit fabric finished with matching piping and braiding to the chair frame. The cushions are firm but comfortable. The cushion covers feature zips so that the top layers can be removed if they need to be cleaned. The suite features a firm sprung base below, which makes the suite extremely comfortable. The suite seats up to five people comfortably. This is a very comfortable suite due to the deep design of the frame.
This item would look superb in a variety of rooms from the living room to the conservatory or orangery. This item would certainly grace any home and is a great investment as they are extremely functional. So don’t miss out your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture.
This suite features a rich brown mahogany colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and the years of care and cleaning they have received.

Provenance:
Staples made top quality furniture and beds from 1895 onwards. They had a commitment to using the finest materials (in particular mahogany) to hand at the time, along with the established cabinetmaking skills, to create some of the best quality furniture of their time. Staples workshops and shop were based at “Staples Corner”, London. The business was proudly granted a Royal Warrant by the King George V for their services of furnishing the Royal family with beds and other antique furniture. During King George V’s visit to France in late 1915 to visit his troops, he was accidentally injured whilst riding his horse through the streets lined with cheering crowds. His horse reared, and he fell, causing damage to his back. On his return to England, physicians to George V advised him to sleep on a Staples bed. Apparently this was due to the unique construction of the beds and mattresses, which demonstrated its superiority in maintaining correct spinal support. Although not obvious to the persons at the time, it is now clear to us that a good quality bed and mattress are integral to healthy, restful sleep. As a result of the improvement in the King’s health and his great satisfaction and thanks, Staples & Co. were granted a “Royal Warrant”. Subsequently, Staples & Co. used the Royal Warrant in all their advertising, literature, specifically their stamps and labels present on their antique furniture. Their furniture was successively supplied to other Royal residences, aristocrats and the wealthy industrialists throughout England and around the world.
