Description:
This is a fine quality antique George III English oak housekeepers / hanging cupboard, circa 1780, in good condition. The cupboard boasts a large amount of hanging and storage space and it would be ideal for a hallway. The cupboard features an elegant protruding cavetto cornice below a solid boarded top. The cupboard is divided into two sections; the top section comprises a cupboard with the original oak hanging hooks and a later hanging rail. The cupboard boasts lovely fielded Arcadian panels. The central door panel (which is fixed) is decorated with a small dome shaped design above a small square panel. The two cupboard doors flank the central panel and feature decoratively shaped panels. The decorative brass door hinges are later Victorian replacements. The doors retain their original brass fretwork key escutcheons. The right-hand door features a working lock, with a working key (the left door has a wooden internal bolt). The cupboard has been built in the traditional manner with peg construction joints. Below the doors sit a set of three dummy drawers. Further below is a set of five working drawers, with a two-over-three design, decorated with elegant reeded moulding edges. The drawers boast the original brass swan neck handles and escutcheons, along with original working drawer locks (with working key). Please note, three of the five drawers feature locks. The drawers are constructed with butt joints and are lined with a combination of oak and pine timber. The cupboard features the original oak top, inset side panels and original backboards constructed with very good quality wide planks. The cupboard stands on its original Georgian bracket feet. The cupboard has good proportions, which make it stand well, but it is also a very practical piece of furniture as it has so much hanging and storage space below. The cupboard dismantles into two sections for easy transport and access into the house.
The cupboard boasts a stunning rich brown oak colour. As it displays the original polish it has a fantastic patination; this can only be achieved through age and the years of care and cleaning it has received.
This item would look superb in a variety of rooms, especially the kitchen, living room or dining room. This item would certainly grace any home. So don’t miss out on your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture.
