Here is a fine example of an antique Biedermeier flame mahogany couch, circa 1840, originating from Germany. The couch incorporates stunning mirror-matched flame mahogany veneers to the top rail and frieze below the seat, with elegant scroll arms either side, with a padded backrest and a comfortable firm sprung seat. The up-swept arms and backrest are solid in joint. The couch stands on its original scroll mahogany legs. The scroll legs are constructed of solid mahogany and the frame is constructed of flame mahogany veneer on pine. This a well constructed piece, with mortise and tenon joints and hand dovetailed construction. It is very heavy to lift which is always a sign of quality!
The couch is upholstered in gold velvet upholstery with cream braiding. It would benefit from being re-upholstered; as it’s faded in places, with some marks. It would therefore make an ideal upholstery project. We offer an upholstery service and we could upholster the couch in your own fabric for an additional cost of £350. The upholstery quote does not include the fabric; you would need to choose or supply the fabric (6 metres is required).
The Biedermeier period refers to an era in Central Europe during which the middle-class grew and arts appealed to common sensibilities in the historical period between 1815, the year of the Congress of Vienna at the end of the Napoleonic Wars, and 1848, the year of the European revolutions. Although the term itself is a historical reference, it is predominantly used to denote the artistic styles that flourished in the fields of literature, music, the visual arts and interior design (source: Wikipedia).
This couch features a mellow brown colour. As it boasts the original polish it has a fantastic mellow colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received. It is impossible to re-create this colour if it has been re-polished.
This couch would look superb in a variety of rooms from the living room to the conservatory. It would certainly grace any home and is a great investment as it is extremely functional. So don’t miss out your chance to own a lovely set of furniture.
Condition Report:
The upholstery shows signs of general fading with small marks across the seat, back and arms. The couch would therefore benefit from being re-upholstered, as the existing upholstery is tired. The advertised price reflects the fact that it is being sold for-upholstery and its current condition. We do offer an upholstery service and we could upholster the couch in your own fabric for an additional cost of £350. The upholstery quote does not include the fabric; you would need to choose / supply the fabric (6 metres is required). The seat is firmly strung and extremely comfortable. The frame, arms and legs are well constructed and solid in joint and there is no missing veneer or mouldings. Some evidence of historical wood worm to the frame, which has been thoroughly treated. There is some colour variation on either side of the mahogany arms, but this is to be expected with the original polish, and it does not detract from the quality of the piece. As the couch boasts the original polish it has a fantastic colour and patination to the wood overall. This colour can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received. It is impossible to re-create this colour if it has been re-polished.
