Here is an example of a superb quality and original Regency Cuban mahogany drop leaf Pembroke table, circa 1820. The table is constructed of top quality solid Cuban mahogany timber and boasts the original polish. During this period, England was imported top quality timber from its colonies and other countries. The table features two elegant reeded drop leaf tops to either side. The leaves can be raised to widen the table. The original wooden hinged arms underneath the tabletop support the drop leaves. There is a working drawer at both ends of the table. The drawers also feature the original brass ring pull lion mask handles. The drawers have been hand dovetailed and oak lined. They also feature a working lock and key. The table sits on a central ring turned pedestal, which is in turn supported by four reeded splayed legs, which terminate in the original brass lion paw feet and castors. This item retains the original polish and is completely original. This table will accommodate four people but when extended, will seat up to six people.
This style of table was possibly named after the Earl or Countess of Pembroke) and was defined as a portable item. Interestingly, it was often used for bedside meals. It was characteristic of Georgian, Neoclassical and Federal styles, including those of Chippendale, Sheraton and Hepplewhite. It was known as one of the most useful but fashionable shapes for an antique table of its age.
The item has a rich mahogany brown colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.
This item would look superb in a variety of rooms from the conservatory, hallway, to the living room or bedroom. This item would certainly grace any home. So don’t miss out your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture.
