This is a good quality antique Victorian Anglo Indian colonial teak vanity box, circa 1870, in good condition. The lid opens up to reveal a beveled mirror. The mirror has been replaced at some time but it is held in place by the original hooks. The mirror, which is attached to the lid, is hinged in a way that allows it to be adjusted to two different angles. Within the box, there are multiple compartments, including three with lids. Six of the compartments form a lift-out tray towards the front, which conceals a further compartment underneath. Three more fixed compartments are situated towards the rear. To the exterior of the box are two inset brass handles, situated at the front and back, which allowed the box to be easily transported whilst on campaigns. The box features the original working lock (with key) that is situated at the front. The base of the box boasts a moulded plinth, which sits atop the original rolling ball feet.
The box would have been commissioned for an army officer in the British military and would have been used during the colonization of India whilst on duty in the field.
This item would look great in a variety of rooms; especially the bedroom. It is an ideal place to store make-up, jewellery and any other close possessions.
The box boasts a rich red/brown teak colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.
This truly is a very beautiful item with quality construction and is original throughout. It is rare to see one in such good condition. This item would certainly grace any home. So don’t miss out on your chance to own such a lovely antique item.
