This is an interesting watercolour with body colour depicting a Chester street scene taken from the old bowling green, viewing Chester cathedral in the distance. The painting is initialed “F.W.” and is dated 1886. The picture is extremely atmospheric and shows the city street life as it was. The predominant colours in the painting are cream, grey and fawn.
This interesting painting has been executed by a professional hand; possibly Francis Walker (1848 – 1916) who was a famous book illustrator and studied at the Royal Dublin Society. He also drew illustrations for the “Illustrated London News”.
