Description:
Here is a great example of a superb quality George III oak dresser displaying a deep rich colour, circa 1810 – 1820, originating from the Talwrn area in Anglesey, North Wales. The dresser is predominantly constructed from oak, but also boasts mahogany and ebony inlay, including mahogany inlaid escutcheons. The dresser rack consists of wide good quality (a sign of quality) backboards, with three grooved racks that can support plates. Above there is a lovely moulded protruding cornice. Large strong shoes that screw into the top of the base support the rack. Below, the breakfront dresser base features a solid two-plank oak top with a central column of working drawers flanked by a cupboard and a drawer each side. To each side of the centre of the dresser are ring turned quarter columns. The base consists of six working drawers with brass knobs and two cupboards, also with brass knobs. The doors are decorated with octagonal mouldings, incorporating fan shape inlay, comprising of sycamore and mahogany. It is rare to see a dresser of this style with all working drawers in the base. Usually, the central drawers are false drawers in dressers of this style. All drawers are lined with softwood and all drawers and cupboards feature working locks and keys. The dresser is decorated with inlaid dots and diamonds, in the typical style of Talwrn, a village on the island of Anglesey, Wales. The inlay includes mahogany, sycamore, mahogany and ebony. The dresser stands on the original shaped bracket feet, decorated with an ornate lower apron. This dresser boasts its original polish and patination, displaying a rich golden brown oak colour, which has been created from 200 years of care and is a sought after size.
This dresser is an excellent investment and would look superb in a variety of rooms from the kitchen, hall way or the living room. This dresser base would certainly grace any home. So don’t miss out on your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture.
Provenance:
This dresser originates from the village of Talwrn, on the island of Anglesey, Wales, UK. Talwrn is renowned for its community of woodworkers who made distinctive furniture from the early 19th Century to the early 20th Century. The pieces are typically decorated with inlaid spots, triangles and diamonds and finished with quarter-sawn oak, exactly as this piece is. They are highly sought after, decorative and functional items that would compliment any country kitchen or dining room. This particular piece enjoys the history of having been the property of the Bishop of Bangor. His grateful parishioners had gifted it to his family in the 1950s, as an antique piece.
Condition Report:
The dresser is in good condition considering its age. The base and rack are original to each other and are not a marriage. Nominal old use cup marks to the top of the dresser and old use marks to the leading edges but nothing significant considering the age of the item. The brass knobs are later replacements. All drawers and doors are in good working condition. There are working locks to each drawer and the two cupboards (with keys). The backboards, drawer linings and feet are all original. The dresser boasts the original polish; therefore it has a fantastic depth of colour and patination displaying a lovely rich golden brown oak colour. This item is solid in joint and ready to use.
