This is a superb quality antique George III Welsh housekeeper’s oak cupboard, circa 1780 – 1810 originating from the mid Wales area. The cupboard itself boasts a protruding canopy to the upper section and features chamfered corners. The top section has two lovely raised Arcadian door panels with two small brass knobs and brass escutcheon. The doors have feature the original working lock and a key. Inside, it features the original shelf along with a useful narrow upper shelf. Below, there is a set of four “dummy” drawers. Further below, is a bank of five working drawers. The top central drawer features the original working lock and a further key. All drawers are pine lined and hand dovetailed this is typical of furniture from this period and region. The cupboard frame is constructed using a peg construction method. The back of the cupboard boasts its rough sawn hewn oak boards with original hand made nails. The drawers also feature lovely brass knobs and escutcheons. The cupboard features the original oak top, oak backboards and lovely figured oak sides constructed with very good quality wide planks. The cupboard stands Georgian bracket feet. The cupboard boasts a stunning original colour and surface patination, which can only be achieved through age and years of care and wax polishing.
The cupboard has good proportions which makes it a sought after size it was designed to fit into farmhouses with low ceilings. The cupboard dismantles into two sections for easy transport and access into the house.
