Description
Here is a very good quality, rare and original antique Low Countries oak primitive credence table, circa 1650, originating from the Low Countries (either Holland, Belgium or France). This table would have been used in a country property or Church from the mid 17th Century onwards. The table, which is of a demi-lune design, features a hinged top that folds out to create a circular table. When closed, there is a latch on the back baluster leg that keeps the leg together. When un-latched, the back baluster leg swings out on the original strap hinges and wooden hinges to support the fold out tabletop. The tabletop also boasts its original iron hinges. Below, there is a straight frieze frame. The table stands on three primitive baluster turned legs, which are united by a straight stretcher at floor level for added strength. The table has been handmade using the pegged construction method this is evident on the top and the frame of the table.
This is an important oak credence table having been around in the days of Charles l, Charles II, Cromwell’s conquest of Ireland & Scotland, and the Great Fire of London.
The table features a deep rich dark Jacobean colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour, depth and patination this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received. It is impossible to re-create this colour if it has been re-polished.
This item would look superb in a variety of rooms from the hallway to living room. This item would certainly grace any home and a great investment, as it’s an extremely functional item. So don’t miss out your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture.
Condition Report
Considering its age, this item is in excellent original condition. Nominal old use marks to the top of the table (e.g. cup marks) and leading edges but nothing significant considering the age of the item. Importantly, the wooden and iron strap hinges to the tabletop and back baluster leg are original and in excellent working order. The table retains its original polish, which is why it boasts such a lovely deep rich dark Jacobean colour. The table is solid in joint and is ready to be used.
