This is a very good quality inset panel golden oak 4ft Edwardian Globe-Wernicke roll top desk circa 1901 – 1920 constructed with top quality oak. It has recently been restored and boasts four graduated drawers in each pedestal and a central drawer. This is a particular good quality desk as it was built by the famous cabinet maker “Globe-Wernicke & Co. Ltd.” in either Birmingham or London. Both pedestals feature a filing drawer in the bottom drawer. The desk boasts golden inset panels throughout and features the original oak cup handles. The desk has an oak modesty board, two pull-out writing slides and the interior has 4 internal drawers (of which two are secret), 12 internal pigeon holes with 2 pen trays and 4 drawers in each pedestal. The internal drawers feature the original wooden handles with each drawer having the facility to fit a label on the front of the drawer. The lock and key are in working order. The internal drawers are constructed of sycamore. The oak has an excellent tight grain with a wax finish. The desk dismantles into three sections for easy storage or transportation. The sides of the desk are “S” shaped and features external oak panels allowing the desk to sit freestanding in the centre of a room. The desk is complete with a working lock and key which operates a secret locking mechanism for the fall and the pedestal drawers. It is rare to see a roll top desk displaying such quality in a great condition.
This desk would look superb in a variety of rooms from the work place to the home office. The desk would certainly grace any home or office and a great investment as they are an extremely functional. So don’t miss out your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture.
Condition Report:
The desk is in very good condition it has recently been restored and is in complete working order. There is no damage or cracks to the tambour (which is common in roll-tops). All drawers are free running. Some nominal old use marks. There has been a replacement piece to the desk top inside the desk in the right hand corner (see photos). Free of worm-worm, solid in joint and ready to use. It features a working lock and key. Please remember that this item is over 100 years old so there will always be some minor wear.
