The Army & Navy Co-operative Society Ltd was setup in 1871 by a group of army and navy officers. The aim of the co-operative was to supply goods to its members at the lowest prices, and was based on two earlier models – the Civil Service Supply Association & the Civil Service Co-operative Society. Their flagship store was on Victoria Street in London. The stores expanded internationally into Paris, Leipzig, Karachi, Mumbai, Calcutta, Shimla & Ranchi. The business suffered badly during WWII when their sites sustained significant bomb damage and when India gained independence in 1947. House of Fraser department stores have now acquired the group.
