Description:
This is a highly decorative antique English 18th century George II carved oak high back settle, with small proportions, circa 1750, constructed with earlier timbers, boasting a stunning colour, in excellent original condition. Ideal for use in the hallway or kitchen. The settle comprises a mid-height back, with a moulded top rail and two primitive finials with three carved panels below, decorated with the original foliate rosette & guilloche carvings. The sturdy down-swept arms are secured by turned supports to a solid two panel oak seat, with a straight frieze below. The settle stands on primitively turned feet to the front and block legs to the rear, all of which are united by bar stretchers for additional strength. The settle has been constructed in the traditional manner with pegged and joined construction. Interestingly, the left arm and frieze is stamped “NT”, possibly the original owner. It is unusual to see early period settled of his small size, which makes in highly desirable.
The bench boasts a rich dark-brown period oak colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour, depth and patination this can only be achieved through the age and years of care and cleaning it has received. It is impossible to re-create this colour if it has been re-polished.
This item would look superb in a variety of rooms from the hallway or kitchen, in either a traditional or contemporary setting. This item would certainly grace any home and a great investment, as it’s an extremely functional item.
Condition Report:
This is a highly decorative antique English 18th century George II carved oak settle, with delightful small proportions, circa 1750, constructed with earlier timbers, boasting a stunning original colour, in excellent original condition. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges, frame, sides and drawer bottoms, but nothing significant considering the age of the item. The bench has been glued solid and has been traditionally wax polished, by hand, in our workshop, to a professional standard, therefore, the finish, colour and patination is of an excellent standard. The settle retains its original polish, featuring a rich dark-brown oak period colour. It looks like the feet tips have been replaced at some point in the past (not unusual given the age of this settle). The bench is well constructed, solid in joint and is ready to be used.
