This is a very rage antique Victorian colonial teak Mandalay box used by the British military in India, circa 1860.

This is a very rare Burmese Victorian travelling soldiers’ deed box known as a Mandalay box, circa 1860 originating from colonial India. The box is profusely inset with brass strap work and brass inlay it has the original steel carrying handles and original working lock and key. There are iron carrying handles to the sides. It opens to reveal many carved teak compartments for storage of precious items together with the original mirror. Some flowers given by a loved one are still enclosed within these compartments. It would have been used by a soldier attached to the British Raj, in India. The box is completely original and features a rich colour.
This item would look great in a variety of rooms especially the office, dining room or bedroom and is an ideal place to store make-up, documents or any other possessions. It has a beautiful deep rich patina which has been generated by the years of cleaning and care it has received.

Condition Report:
The item is in excellent condition and is commensurate with its age. The hinges are not damaged, the lid closes cleanly. The original key turns the locking mechanism to lock the box. As the box contains the original mirror, some foxing is present. We can replace the mirror if requested. There is ware to the inside floral decoration. The box is complete with the original tray inserts and original encased flowers. This item is solid in joint and free of woodworm. Some marks to the leading edges and corners. The wear and tear observed in this item is in line for an item, which is over 150 years old.
