Description
This is a stunning quality set of eight carved mahogany dining chairs in the style of the Chippendale period having freshly upholstered seats, circa 1860, made by the renowned cabinetmakers, S&H Jewell of London. The set consists of six side chairs and two armchairs. All chairs features shaped head rails with finely executed floral carved interlaced backs. The central splat is with further floral carvings. Flanking this is further floral vertical carving to outside frame of the chairs. The chairs features drop in seats, which have been newly upholstered in top quality hard wearing taupe shade wool & cotton upholstery. The underside of the seats is finished with a gadroon apron. Elegantly shaped cabriole legs that feature scroll acanthus leaf carvings to the knee of the legs, terminate in pronounced ball and claw feet. The backs of the chairs are chamfered this is a sign of top quality. The two armchairs feature a similar design they feature stunning carved eagle heads to the ends of the shaped arms, with carved acanthus leaf scroll ends at the point of connecting to the vertical chair back. This is a true set of chairs (they have not been matched together) and they are extremely comfortable. The chairs are heavy in weight this is a further sign of quality. These chairs were made by the renowned cabinetmaker S&H Jewell of 131-2 High Holborn, London, W.C.1. They are stamped with their label on the underside of the chair frames. S&H Jewell specialised in boardroom, library and dining furniture and was based in the Holborn area of London they were recorded as cabinetmakers from 1830 onwards.
The frames of the chairs feature a rich dark mahogany colour. As they boast the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination this can only be achieved through age and the years of care and cleaning they have received.

Condition Report:
This set of chairs is in excellent condition. This is a true set of chairs (i.e. they have not been matched together). The seats have been newly upholstered in top quality taupe shade wool & cotton upholstery. There are no breaks to the back or legs of any of the chairs. The seats are firm but extremely comfortable. The chairs are heavy in weight, which is a good sign of quality. These chairs were made by the renowned cabinetmakers, S&H Jewell of London. As this set of chairs retains its original polish, it ensures there is an excellent colour and patination to the timber. This colour can only be found in furniture with its original polish it cannot be recreated with new polish. These chairs are solid in joint (not lose or wobbly) and are ready to use.
