Description:
This is a very good quality antique American Victorian sheriffs’ solid oak revolving office armchair, circa 1900, which has been newly upholstered, and is in excellent condition.
The chair has been newly upholstered in top quality full grain dark green leather. The chair features an elegant shaped leather backrest, below an arched bar back which incorporates scribe carvings. The backrest is flanked by several finely turned spindles, which in turn support single piece down-swept arms. The leather-padded seat is extremely comfortable to sit on; it features brass studwork to the perimeter (this studwork is also repeated on the backrest) on a bowed front rail. The underside of the seat has been webbed in the traditional manner.
The chair stands on protruding splayed legs and terminates on the original brass castors. The chair rotates 360 degrees; it is height adjustable (with a locking latch – see photos) and also features a reclining mechanism (the tension cannot be adjusted). The chair is extremely comfortable as it incorporates a padded seat.
This style of chair originates from North America; they were particularly used in law enforcement (Sheriff) offices and also in other public offices in the latter part of the 19th century.
This chair features a rich mid-brown oak colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.
This item would look superb in a variety of rooms in the home, especially the office or study as it so comfortable. This item would certainly grace any home. So don’t miss out your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture.
Condition Report:
The chair and mechanism are in original working condition. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges of the chair frame, but nothing significant considering the age of the item. The chair frame has been cleaned and polished in our workshop. The chair has been newly upholstered in to top quality full grain sage green leather, which incorporates the traditional brass studwork tacks to the seat perimeter, and the webbing to the underside. The original revolving mechanism is in good working order, having been cleaned and serviced. There is some play to the mechanism but this is perfectly acceptable, and in line with the age of the chair. The chair stands its original legs (with no breaks) and brass castors. This item is well constructed, is solid in joint and ready to use.
