Summary Description:
Here is a fine quality antique English Art Deco burr walnut six-piece bedroom suite, which includes two wardrobes, a dressing table & stool, a pair of bedside cupboards and headboard, by M. P. Davis Furniture Manufacturers of London, circa 1930, in excellent original condition. The suite is constructed from fabulous mirror matched burr walnut veneers and featuring original walnut handles. This bedroom suite boasts classic Art Deco styling throughout; this is visible in the mirror-matched burr walnut veneers, shaped plinths, clean lines and the materials used. It is rare to see large fine quality bedroom suites, such as this one, still in existence today.
Three-Door Wardrobe Description:
The three-door wardrobe boasts a breakfront design, displaying lovely mirror matched walnut veneers, along with elegant curved corners and edges and original Bakelite handles. The left- and right-hand doors feature the original working locks, with a working key, while the centre door retains its original working latches. The doors open to reveal a hanging compartment to the left-hand side, including a shelf in the top right-hand corner, a hanging rail with four hooks to the left-hand side, flanked either side by a hanging rack, each with four sliding hooks. A second hanging rail is positioned underneath the shelf on the right-hand side, with a further hanging rack & four sliding hooks on the right-hand side. At the bottom is a shoe rack. Mounted at the back of the hanging compartment is a labelled camphor holder, where bundles of cotton wool containing a solution of camphor oil can be placed, to ward-off clothes moths. The inside of the left-hand door also boasts a mirror. The interior of right-hand side of the wardrobe comprises three hinged glass fronted compartments, above a sliding tray. Below is an open compartment, while further below are two mahogany lined dovetailed drawers. Finally, the inside of the right-hand door boasts a mirror. The various sections, compartments & drawers feature labels, indicating what is intended to be stored in each corresponding place. This indicates that the wardrobe – and the suite as a whole – is likely to have been part of a shop display. The wardrobe can be dismantled into three pieces (plinth, hanging compartment & right-hand section) for easier access into the bedroom.
Two-Door Wardrobe Description:
The two-door wardrobe echoes the exterior breakfront design of the larger wardrobe, boasting lovely mirror matched walnut veneers, along with elegant curved corners and edges and original Bakelite handles. The left-hand door features the original latches, while the right-hand door retains the original working lock, with a working key. The doors open to reveal a hanging rack with four hooks to the left-hand side, below which is a shoe rack. To the rear of the hanging space is a labelled holder for camphor, for repelling clothes moths. A mirror is also present to the inside of the left-hand door. The right-hand side of the interior comprises an open compartment at the top, with a hinged, glass-fronted compartment below, above a compartmentalised drawer/tray. Further below is a second glass-fronted compartment, with an open compartment underneath and two mahogany lined dovetailed drawers further below. To the inside of the right-hand door is a smaller mirror, above a labelled holder for containing studs. As with the three-door wardrobe, the various sections, compartments and drawers feature labels. The wardrobe sits on a recessed moulded plinth. Because the wardrobe has a narrow width, it is ideal for compact rooms, as it consumes very little space. The wardrobe can be dismantled into three sections (left-hand section, right-hand section & plinth) for easier access into the bedroom.
Dressing Table Description:
The dressing table boasts a central circular adjustable mirror. The dressing table displays lovely mirror matched burr walnut veneers. Below, the centre section of the dressing table is constructed with a demi-lune shape, echoing the shape of the mirror, with an up-stand to the rear. The centre section also includes a single bow-front drawer. Either side of the centre section are cupboard pedestals in a breakfront design. The cupboard doors retain the original Bakelite handles and open to reveal three graduated drawers to each pedestal. The drawers are dovetailed, mahogany lined, run smoothly and close flush to the frame. The dressing table stands on its original recessed plinths. The mirror can be removed for easy access to the bedroom. Accompanying the dressing table is a cylindrical revolving stool, which has been newly upholstered in top quality cream colour full grain leather. The leather seat serves as a lid, opening on a hinge to reveal storage space inside. The stool rotates on a revolving mechanism inside the recessed plinth and is in good working order.
Bedside Cupboards Description:
These bedsides boast lovely mirror matched burr walnut veneers and feature a quarter-circular top, above an open shelf. Below, the bedsides incorporate a cupboard section in a breakfront design. The cupboard doors retain their original Bakelite handles and open to reveal a two-tier internal compartment. The bedsides stand on the original and recessed moulded plinths. These bedsides boast classic art deco styling in the overall design of the curved corners, clean lines to the tops, the handles and the plinths. The bedsides are designed to be attached the headboard.
Headboard Description:
The headboard features classic Art Deco cloud shape styling with curved lines and mirror matched burr walnut veneer. The top features a simple pediment. The headboard is designed to be screwed to the two bedsides, forming a singular unit, once in situ. The headboard should be used with a divan base.
This Art Deco bedroom suite furniture set would look superb in the bedroom. It would certainly grace any home and is a great investment as it is extremely functional. So, don’t miss out on your chance to own a lovely set of furniture.
