Description:
Here is a fine quality and substantial antique English Edwardian oak revolving office armchair made my Phillips & Sons, circa 1910, which has been newly upholstered in burgundy red leather, and is in excellent condition. The armchair features a comfortable curved scroll back, connected to wraparound arms, supported by an elegant vertical fan back. The chair seat has been newly upholstered in top quality full grain burgundy red leather. The chair sits on four splayed oak legs that terminate on the original steel and porcelain castors. The chair incorporates a revolving mechanism and it rotates 360 degrees; the seat height can be adjusted by turning a ribbed metal screw on the underside of the chair. The mechanism also features a reclining action, the tension of which can be adjusted by turning a small wheel at the front of the mechanism. The chair mechanism has been, cleaned, restored and serviced and is in excellent working order. The chair frame is sturdy and extremely comfortable to sit on, as it features a lovely padded seat.
The armchair features a rich golden oak colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.
This item would look superb in a variety of rooms in the home, especially the office or study as it is so comfortable. This item would certainly grace any home. So don’t miss out on your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture.
Provenance:
The business that came to be known as James Phillips & Sons was originally founded in the 1800s by John Phillips. John Phillips had spent most of his life at sea, during the time of the Napoleonic wars. During this time, he collected clocks and other portable goods. When John left the sea, he set up a shop in West Street St. Philips in Bristol. After John’s death, his son Edward took over the business, expanding it to two shops in Broadmead. Over time, the business continued to grow and by the mid 20th Century, the business owned multiple stores and began displaying their furnishings in an exhibition style, much akin the IKEA’s style of displaying their products set up to mimic home room settings. In its heyday, the business dealt in a wide range of furnishings, such as upholstery, cabinets, office equipment, cut glass, safes, silver, china & cutlery. They also had a department which dealt in second-hand Georgian and Jacobean furniture, and a further department dealt with hotel orders. The company ceased trading in 1973.
Condition Report:
The chair and mechanism are in excellent condition. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges of the chair but nothing significant considering the age of the item. The chair seat has been newly upholstered in top quality full grain burgundy red leather. Therefore, the leather is in excellent condition, with no wear, fading or damage. The reclining and adjustable height mechanism is in good working order, having just been cleaned, restored and serviced. There is some play to the mechanism but this is perfectly acceptable, and in line with the age of the chair. The chair features a rich brown oak colour, having been cleaned and polished in our workshops. The chair features solid mug castors, which are also in good condition. This item is solid in joint and ready to use.
