Description:
Here is a fine quality English Georgian solid mahogany drop leaf Pembroke table, circa 1790, in excellent original condition. The table is constructed of top quality solid Cuban mahogany timber and boasts a stunning grain configuration to the leaves. During this period, England was importing top quality timber from its colonies and other countries. The table is constructed with two elegant drop leaves either side. The leaves can be raised to widen the table. The original wooden hinged bearers / flaps underneath the tabletop support the drop leaves. The table stands on four sturdy moulded fluted legs. This is an ideal small dining table, which can accommodate six people with the leaves raised, or is a decorative as a side / occasional table for use around the home.
This style of table was possibly named after the Earl or Countess of Pembroke and the smaller versions were defined as a portable item. Interestingly, it was often used for bedside meals. It was characteristic of Georgian, Neoclassical and Federal styles, including those of Chippendale, Sheraton and Hepplewhite. It was known as one of the most useful but fashionable shapes for an antique table of its age.
The item has a rich mahogany brown colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.
This item would look superb in a variety of rooms from the conservatory, hallway, to the living room or bedroom. This item would certainly grace any home. So don’t miss out on your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture.
