Description:
Here is a stunning quality antique English George III linen press, constructed from the finest Cuban mahogany available at the time, circa 1790, in good condition. The top section supports a drop down (detachable) cavetto-moulded cornice, decorated with ebony string inlay, above two exquisite figured mahogany doors, with inset rectangular panels, incorporating further decorative ebony string inlay. The left door features its original brass strip (a sign of quality) and locking mechanism. The doors benefit from a working brass lever lock (with working key) and the original key escutcheons and hinges. The doors open to reveal five original mahogany lined and hand dovetailed slides (drawers), which where designed to store all manner of clothes or bedding. Below, the two large drawers are constructed with fine hand dovetail joints, and the drawer linings and bottoms are constructed from solid mahogany. The drawer fronts incorporate later top quality period brass swan neck handles; with the original key escutcheons and original working lever locks (including working key). The drawer fronts are also decorated with further ebony string inlay. The press terminates on its original top quality bracket feet (which is rare to see, as these are usually replaced with changing fashions or get damaged over time). The linen press also features the original backboards. The linen press dismantles into two sections (top and base) allowing easy access up the staircase into the bedroom. The cornice can also be unscrewed if necessary to gain access up tight stairs or through narrow doorways.
This is a sought after linen press due to its quality construction using fine Cuban figured mahogany timbers. The linen press is designed in the classic Georgian style, with simple, pronounced clean lines and a focus on symmetry.
The linen press has a rich dark red-brown mahogany colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.
This item is an excellent investment but also very practical for storage and would look superb in a variety of rooms, especially the bedroom. This item would certainly grace any home. So don’t miss out your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture.
Condition Report:
This item is in good condition. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges of the frame (see photos), but nothing significant considering its age. Both doors close and lock comfortably. There are no warps or splits to the figured mahogany doors (which is common in linen presses). The doors lock using the original brass door latches, along with a working lever lock (with working key). The linen press retains five original mahogany lined slides (drawers) and two large mahogany lined drawers below; all of which comfortably slide out and close flush to the frame. The drawers retain their original working brass level locks (with working key) and original decorative key escutcheons. The drawer fronts feature later old period brass swan neck handles, which are of very good quality. Importantly, the entire ebony string inlay decoration is intact and in good condition. The press terminates on its original top quality bracket feet (which is rare to see, as these are usually replaced with changing fashions or get damaged over time). The linen press also features the original backboards.
