Description:
This is a stunning quality large antique English Georgian Regency linen press, constructed from figured mahogany, satinwood and ebony inlay, boasting a secret cornice drawer, circa 1820, in excellent original condition. This linen press incorporates a detachable moulded cornice to the top, decorated with satinwood and ebony inlay, featuring a secret drawer within the cornice itself. We have seen many linen presses in our time but never one with a secret drawer in the cornice! The secret drawer can be accessed by removing a wooden peg and inserting it through the hole on the underside of the cornice to lift the base clear of a stopper, to allow you to open the secret drawer. This secret drawer is a perfect hiding place for valuables such as jewellery or money, as you would never know this drawer existed unless you owned the linen press!
The top section comprises of two lovely solid figured mahogany panel doors, decorated with ebonised inlay. The left-hand door retains its original brass sliding latches, while the right-hand door features the original working lever lock (with working key) and brass closure strip (a sign of quality). The top section opens to reveal a bank of six original sliding linen trays, constructed with pine drawer linings and bottoms. These trays provide lots of storage space for linen and clothes. The base section comprises a two-over-two drawer configuration, with further plentiful storage space. The drawer sides are pine lined and hand-dovetailed, therefore constructed in the original manner. The drawer bottoms retain the original Regency blue rice paper, which is nice to see. The drawer fronts are decorated with elegant figured mahogany fronts, cock-beaded detail, whilst retaining the original brass oval plate handles and backplates, key escutcheons and working locks (with key). The linen press is raised on its original splayed bracket feet (which is rare to see, as these are usually replaced with changing fashions or get damaged over time) above a shaped and reeded frieze. The linen wardrobe also features the original pine backboards. The linen chest dismantles into three sections (cornice, top and base) allowing easy access up the staircase and into the bedroom.
This Regency linen press features a rich red-brown mahogany colour. It has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.
This Georgian mahogany linen chest is an excellent investment but is also very practical for storage and would look superb in a variety of rooms, especially the bedroom. This item would certainly grace any home.
