Description:
Here is a fine quality antique English Victorian Aesthetic walnut & sycamore chess / occasional octagonal table, circa 1880, in good original condition. The top boasts an inlaid walnut and sycamore chessboard (the walnut represents the darker squares and the sycamore denotes the lighter squares), with a walnut perimeter and an elegant shaped frieze below. Underneath, the tabletop is supported by a sturdy shaped column support with chamfered edges, above a square moulded stepped pedestal base, with protruding square block feet on each corner. The table boasts lovely styling and proportions as well as a compact design and reflects the designs of aesthetic movement in England during the latter part of the Victorian period. The table is surprisingly heavy for a table of this size; it was probably designed to be in order to avoid the chess pieces moving if the table was accidentally knocked.
This item would look great in a variety of rooms from the hallway, to the living or drawing room.
This truly is a very beautiful item with quality construction and is original throughout. This item would certainly grace any home. So don’t miss out on your chance to own such a lovely antique item.
This chess table features a rich warm brown walnut colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and the years of care and cleaning it has received.
Provenance:
The aesthetic movement was a late nineteenth century movement that championed pure beauty and ‘art for art’s sake’ emphasising the visual and sensual qualities of art and design over practical, moral or narrative considerations. The aesthetic movement flourished in Britain in the 1870s and 1880s and was important equally in fine and applied arts.

Condition Report:
This games table is in good original condition. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges, but nothing significant, considering the age of the item. A number of small indentations are present to the top (see photos), but they do not detract from the overall look or quality of the piece. Please bear in mind; this table is over 140 years old! Otherwise, there are no marks, scratches or stains to the top. The supporting column and pedestal base are also in very good and solid condition. The table features the original polish, which is what gives it such a stunning patination. The table sits firm on the ground and does not wobble. It is well constructed (it is heavy to lift), solid in joint and ready to use.
