Here is a fine quality antique English Victorian Rococo carved mahogany two-seater couch, circa 1880, and is in good condition. The couch has been newly upholstered in top quality structured satin brocade upholstery, which features a “fleur-de-lis” pattern in cream and pale gold colours, with matching fine quality cream braiding to the frame. The couch is constructed of mahogany and features a lovely shaped frame with a chiseled crest / top rail, padded back, secured by out swept padded arms, which incorporate fine scroll carvings. There is a stunning floral carved fretwork pierced centre, incorporating a French rocaille (shell motif), which travels the length of the backrest. The couch benefits from a sprung serpentine shaped seat; the seat is firm but comfortable; you do not sink into the seat. The seat features a simple scribe moulded frieze and the underside is finished with traditional hessian backing. The couch is raised on fine curvilinear front legs, with plain out swept legs to the rear. The legs terminate on the original brass castors.
This couch features a rich dark, brown mahogany colour to the frame. As it boasts the original polish it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received. It is impossible to re-create this colour if it has been re-polished.
This couch would look superb in a variety of rooms from the hallway to the living room. The couch would certainly grace any home and is a great investment as it is extremely functional. So don’t miss out on your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture.
Provenance – Rococo:
Rococo was an 18th-century artistic movement and style, which affected several aspects of the arts including painting, sculpture, architecture, interior design, decoration, literature, music and theatre. It takes its name from the French rocaille (pronounced ‘rock-eye’), which means the rock or broken shell motifs that often formed part of the designs. The Rococo developed in the early part of the 18th century in Paris, France as a reaction against the grandeur symmetry and strict regulations of the Baroque, especially that of the Palace of Versailles. The Rococo style was used primarily in furniture, silver and ceramics, rather than architecture.
