Here is an example of a fine quality antique French Empire figured walnut & marble chest of drawers, circa 1860, in excellent original condition. Constructed with a stunning quality grey and white veined Italian freestanding marble top, it features chamfered edges with a reeded moulding. Below, the chest features a stepped moulded cornice above the marble top, with a bank of four drawers below; the top drawer is incorporated as a hidden cushion drawer. The drawer fronts boast stunning quality figured bookmarked walnut veneers with the original brass key escutcheons and lever locks. The chest also retains the original working key. Inside, the drawers are lined and hand dovetailed in solid chestnut. The sides of the chest are constructed from solid walnut. The chest features chamfered corners, with a fine moulded beading to the plinth and the chest stands on the original bracket feet.
The chest and marble splits into two sections for easy transportation (the marble is designed to be freestanding).
The chest features a rich figured walnut colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.
This item would look superb in a variety of rooms in the home, especially the bedroom, as it provides so much storage space. This item would certainly grace any home. So don’t miss out your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture.
Condition Report:
This chest is in excellent original condition. Nominal old use to the leading edges and drawer fonts, but nothing significant considering the age of the item. Importantly, there is no damage or chips to the original freestanding marble top. Please note the marble top is designed to be freestanding which means it is meant to rest by gravity alone on the top of the chest. The marble is very heavy and is not supposed to be glued down. The dovetailed chestnut lined drawers are smooth running and close flush to the frame. They also feature the original brass escutcheons and lever locks with the original working key. The chest features the original feet. As the chest boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received. It has a good mellow colour and patination. This item is solid in joint and ready to use.
