Description:
Here is an attractive and good quality primitive antique French provincial chestnut rectangular coffee table, circa 1780, in good condition of primitive design. The top of the coffee table features five chestnut planks, boasting a stunning colour and finished with a simple thumb moulded edge. Below, there is a large single working chestnut-lined drawer, which features a primitive butt joint construction. The original floral carved metal drawer escutcheons support circular drop ring handles and sit on a cushion fronted drawer design to the chestnut frame. The single drawer is ideal for storing magazines, paper and other smaller items, as it is so deep. The frame of the table is constructed using the traditional peg construction method and the frieze is decorated with a shaped apron on four simple elegant chamfered block feet. Simple decorative scribe moulded chestnut panels are visible on the sides of the coffee table, enabling the table to be freestanding.
This coffee table features a rich mid to dark brown chestnut colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour, patination and grain configuration; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.
This period coffee table is unique and quirky with stunning colour and quality; it would be ideal in either a traditional or contemporary setting. So, don’t miss out your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture!
Condition Report:
This coffee table is in good condition. Adapted from a taller table some time ago, the table boasts its original polish; it has a fantastic colour and patination to the top. There is a stunning grain configuration to the elm. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges and top but nothing significant considering the age of the item. There are no significant marks, scratches or stains to the top of the table. Historical signs of wood worm to the table, however it has been thoroughly treated. The single working drawer is in good working order; it features the original circular metal drop handles and the drawer closes flush to the frame. The table is solid in joint (does not wobble) and is ready to use.
