Description: This is a good quality harlequin set of five period antique ash & elm country farmhouse spindle-back rush seated kitchen-dining chairs, circa 1790, boasting stunning colour and patination, which are in good condition. This harlequin (matched) set, which consists of 5 side chairs. The chairs boast a prominent shaped top rail, consisting of ‘ears’ on either side and supported on both sides by upright supports. One of the chairs also boasts a superior scribe moulded top rail. Below, the chairs have two banks of refined turned spindles, secured by two horizontal bowed rails. The seats have been hand rushed and they are in good condition. The base of the chairs features lovely turned legs and a bulbous shaped stretcher to the front. The front stretcher is heavy and turned – a good sign of quality. The chairs feature twin turned side stretchers and a rear stretcher; which ensures the chairs stand firm on the ground. All chairs are made from top quality ash and elm, and are firm and solid.
This design of chair was originally made in the Lancashire and Cheshire region of the North West of England, but was commonly known as a “Lancashire” chair. They were made for use in kitchens in simple country homes around the North West area during the time of the great mills in the Industrial Revolution.
The chairs exhibit a rich warm brown colour. As they boast the original polish, they have a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.
