Here is an example of a top quality set of 12 antique Victorian carved mahogany dining chairs, circa 1880, in excellent original condition. Although not stamped, the design of these chairs is attributable to the renowned furniture makers, James Schoolbred & Co. of London. They feature a shaped moulded top rail, incorporating a carved flower enriched with fine punch work. Likewise, the supporting shaped central rail below features a similar carved design. The carved top and central rail makes this set of chairs more refined than the standard Victorian balloon back chair design. The chairs boast serpentine stuff-over seats, which have been newly upholstered in top quality hard wearing taupe shade wool & cotton upholstery. They stand on ring turned fluted front legs, sabre rear legs and the seat frame boasts an elegant reeded front rail. This set of chairs has been constructed with the best quality mahogany timber available at the time. The chairs are heavy in weight and extremely sturdy.
The chairs feature a rich red and brown mahogany colour. As they boast the original polish, they have a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning they have received. This rich original colour cannot be re-created if they have been re-polished.
These chairs would look good anywhere, from a formal dining room or within a boardroom. They would certainly grace any home or office and are a great investment, as they are extremely functional. So don’t miss out your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture.
