Description:
Here is a fine example of a superb quality antique Welsh Caernarfonshire (North Wales) George III oak dresser base and rack, displaying good colour, circa 1830, in excellent original condition.
The Welsh dresser is predominantly constructed from oak, but also boasts the original ebony knobs as well as bone escutcheons. The shaped rack consists of wide oak backboards (a sign of quality), with three grooved horizontal racks that can support plates. The top of the base also has provision for plate storage when the rack is in place. To the top of the rack there is a lovely straight protruding cornice. The rack rests upon the dresser base, on large strong shaped shoes. Below, the breakfront dresser base features a solid three-plank oak top with a central column of working oak fronted drawers flanked by a cupboard and a drawer each side. To either side of the dresser base, as well as either side of the breakfront section, there are quarter columns. The base consists of six working oak fronted drawers with the original turned ebony knobs and two cupboards, also with the original knobs. The doors are decorated with fielded panels. It is nice to see that this dresser has all its drawers working. Quite often, similar dressers have feature faux / decorative drawers down the centre but this dresser boasts all working drawers, which is a nice feature.
All drawers are pine lined, hand dovetailed, smooth running and close flush to the frame. There are working original locks to the top central drawer, left- and right-hand drawers and right-hand cupboard and bottom drawer, with a working key. The rest of the drawers feature faux keyholes. The drawers and cupboards boast kite-shaped bone escutcheons. The dresser stands on the original shaped bracket feet. This dresser boasts its original polish and patination, displaying a rich oxblood colour, which has been created from 200 years of care.
This oak Welsh dresser is an excellent investment and would look superb in a variety of rooms from the kitchen, hall way or the living room. This dresser base would certainly grace any home. So don’t miss out on your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture.
Provenance:
This oak Welsh dresser originates from the county of Caernarfonshire in North Wales, United Kingdom. The dresser is similar to dresser constructed in the neighbouring island of Anglesey, specifically the village of Talwrn, Wales, UK. Talwrn was renowned for its community of woodworkers who made distinctive furniture from the early 19th Century to the early 20th Century. The pieces are typically decorated with inlaid spots, triangles and diamonds and finished with quarter-sawn oak. This dresser depicts the same overall design but without the inlaid spots, triangles and diamonds. This style of dresser is highly sought after, decorative and functional items that would compliment any country kitchen or dining room. This particular dresser came from a farmhouse, near Conwy, where it had remained in the same family since it was made, until now. It is therefore the first time it has come onto the market for sale, which makes it a particularly special find.
Condition Report:
The dresser is in excellent original condition, considering its age. The base and rack are original to each other and are not a marriage. Nominal old use marks to the top of the dresser and leading edges, but nothing significant considering the age of the item. The dresser base retains its original ebony knobs and the bone escutcheons are all intact and in good condition. All drawers and doors are in good working condition. There are working original locks to the top central drawer, left- and right-hand drawers and right-hand cupboard and bottom drawer, with a working key. The rest of the drawers feature faux keyholes. The backboards, drawer linings and feet are all original. The dresser boasts the original polish; therefore, it has a fantastic depth of colour and patination displaying a lovely rich oak colour. This item is solid in joint and ready to use.
