Here is a fine quality antique George II oak farmhouse dresser base / sideboard, circa 1740, originating from North Wales, in good original condition. Constructed from bog oak, which was oak that was reclaimed from fallen oak trees in peat bogs, it produces a stunning deep rich dark brown colour, because of all the minerals the timber absorbed from the peat and soil. Interestingly, bog oak was commonly used to inlay fine decorative pieces, as an alternative to ebony. Bog oak is very dense wood and therefore this dresser is extremely heavy to lift! Comprising of a three-plank top, with a plate bead, which allows you to display plates vertically against the wall without fear of the plates sliding forwards, it is finished with a thumb-moulded edge. The base features a central bank of three cushion-fronted drawers which boast the original brass swan neck handles and brass back plates, with the original working locks (including key), flanked by two small cupboards decorated with the original iron butterfly hinges. The cupboard doors also feature working lever locks and a key. Two smaller drawers are located above the cupboard doors. All the drawers are lined with bog oak (note the thick drawer linings) and feature primitive hand dovetail joints. The sides of the dresser feature solid oak fielded panels, with a simple moulded frieze below, raised on the original oak bracket feet. The original backboards are constructed of oak, which is typical for a dresser of this style.
As this item boasts the original polish, it has a good colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and the years of care and cleaning they have received.
This dresser is an excellent investment and would look superb in a variety of rooms from the kitchen, hall way or the dining room. This dresser base would certainly grace any home. So don’t miss out your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture.
