Description:
Here is an example of a fine quality antique Welsh Regency high joined oak potboard dresser base and rack, originating from South Wales, displaying a stunning colour and patination, circa 1810, in excellent condition.
The style and colour of this oak dresser was indicative to this area due to its hardy terrain, rich in mineral content. In South Wales, a simple lighter form of open-base potboard was common, compared to the more refined and heavier dressers made in mid and north Wales. The dresser boasts good proportions. The dresser features a cavetto cornice above a escalloped canopy and open rack, connected by decoratively serpentine shaped upright supports. The two graduating shelves, each with plate beads (to stop plates sliding forward) and original brass hanging hooks, can support all manner of plate sizes on all levels. There is a further plate bead on the top of the dresser base and decorative faux / dummy spice drawers below.
The base has been built using the traditional peg construction method. It incorporates a two-plank top with five working drawers below. The drawers are constructed with pine drawer linings, including pine drawer bottoms, constructed with hand dovetail joints. The drawer fronts feature good quality later Victorian brass swan neck handles and shaped brass back plates. The base is raised on four-baluster ring turned legs to the front and block legs to rear, decorated with a stunning Regency fan-shaped spandrels / apron, united by a pot-board base below, where the planks run side to side.
The dresser features a superb rich oxblood oak colour. As it boasts the original polish and patination, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received (it cannot be recreated by re-polishing).
The dresser would look superb in any hallway, kitchen or dining room. This item would certainly grace any home and is a great investment as it is extremely functional. So don’t miss out on your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture.
Condition Report:
This potboard dresser base is in excellent condition, which is commensurate with its age. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges, including inside of drawers, but nothing significant considering the age of them. The base and rack are original to each other. The rack retains its original brass hooks. The drawer fronts feature good quality later Victorian brass swan neck handles and shaped brass back plates. The dresser is raised on its original legs and pot-board. The dresser boasts its original polish and patination, which explains why this dresser displays a stunning colour – this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received. The dresser is well constructed, solid in joint with no loose movements and is ready to be used.
