This is a superb quality antique George III Welsh housekeeper’s oak cupboard, circa 1780 – 1820 originating from the Carmarthenshire/ Cardiganshire border area, Wales. Also known as a “Carmarthen coffer”, it has a specific regional design originating from West Wales. The front of cupboard boasts stunning medullary rays and colour, which visually, makes it a stunning colour with excellent figuration to he timber. The cupboard itself boasts an elegant protruding canopy below a solid boarded top. The top section has two lovely raised and fielded Gothic shaped Arcadian door panels with two small oak knobs and ivory escutcheon.
The doors feature the original working lock and a working key. Unusual assimilated bamboo corners flank the doors. Inside, it features the original pine shelf. Below, there is a set of three raised “dummy” drawers or panels. Further below, is a set of five working drawers arranged with the larger drawers in the centre and below flanked by two smaller drawers each side. The top central drawer features the original working lock and a working key. All drawers are pine lined and hand dovetailed this is typical of furniture from this period and region. The drawers also feature lovely original turned knobs. The cupboard features the original oak top, oak backboards and lovely oak sides constructed with very good quality wide planks. The cupboard stands on the original Georgian bracket feet. The cupboard boasts a stunning original polish, colour and surface patination this can only be achieved through age and years of care and wax polishing.
The cupboard has good proportions which makes it a sought after size it was designed to fit into farmhouses with low ceilings. The cupboard dismantles into two sections for easy transport and access into the house.
