Description
Here is a very good quality antique English George III solid elm six-plank country-made trunk, circa 1800, in excellent original condition. The trunk boasts sought after proportions with a lovely warm mellow colour and stunning elm grain configuration. The trunk is constructed using six single planks (a sign of quality), with pronounced dovetails joints to all four edges with under a simple block moulded top. The trunk also stands on a simple moulded plinth. The single piece top opens up to reveal the original wrought iron strap hinges, which are in excellent condition. The trunk also retains its original iron lock with a simple oval brass escutcheon. The interior is clean and dry. The back of the trunk is clean and the floor of the trunk is also original.
This style of country trunk was constructed all over England during the early 19th century and was the precursor to the chest of drawers. They were found in most country dwellings and used as a general-purpose storage unit for all manner of valuable possessions from clothing, and blankets to utensils.
The trunk boasts a rich mellow elm colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.
This item would look great in a variety of rooms from the hallway, to the living room or bedroom at the foot of a bed as an ottoman or even a coffee table.
Condition Report
This trunk is in excellent original condition. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges but nothing significant considering the age of the item. The trunk retains its original wrought iron hinges and original working lock (with working key). There are no splits to the tops sides or bottom of the coffer. The interior is clean, dry and the trunk is practical and useable. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received (it cannot be recreated through re-polishing). The trunk is solid in joint and ready to use.
