Description:
Here is a pair of fine quality English reproduction French Neoclassical style burr walnut bedside cabinets by Bevan Funnell, circa 1960, in excellent original condition. The bedsides feature a concave front shape and comprise shaped tops, which boast stunning burr walnut veneer, surrounded by a cross-banded perimeter. Below is a single, hand dovetailed and mahogany lined drawer with a cock beaded front. The interior of the drawer on each bedside displays a Reprodux label with the inscription “A Bevan Funnell of Brighton Product”. The drawer is place above a spacious two-tier compartment, the door to which is curved and panelled. Each cabinet is hinged on opposite sides, which allows you to have the doors open outwards from each side of the bed, enabling easier access into the cupboard. The drawers and doors all retain their original brass swan neck handles on shaped escutcheons. The bedside frames boast reeded canted corners to the front and rest on turned, reeded legs to the front with block legs to the rear. These bedsides cabinets boast exceptional walnut veneer throughout and exhibit typical Neoclassical styling in the simple, clean lines and symmetry.
This besides feature a mellow walnut colour. As they boast the original polish, they have a lovely colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.
These bedsides would look superb in a variety of rooms from the living room to the bedroom. They would certainly grace any home and are a great investment as they are an extremely functional. So don’t miss out your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture.
Provenance:
The Bevan Funnell cabinetmaking business was established in 1945 as a business venture by Barry Bevan Funnell and Pamela Funnell, with just £50. Barry and Pamela began by buying and selling second hand furniture, thus building up their contacts and customer base. By 1947, the business had moved to new premises in Newhaven, where they began producing their own oak and mahogany furniture. A year later, Barry purchased a 60-foot yacht and furnished it with as much of the company’s furniture as possible. The yacht was then used to advertise their products, being sailed initially around the UK and then overseas to other European countries.
Over the decades, the business grew into a global enterprise; Barry was awarded the O.B.E. in 1969 and the company was awarded the Queen’s Award for Industry twice, becoming the first business to do so.
The deaths of Barry and Pamela in the early 2000’s led the company to be put into employee ownership, and it was eventually sold to The Swann Group, where it continues to flourish to this day.
