This is a superb quality set of 8 ash and elm country farmhouse spindle-back rush seated kitchen chairs, circa 1970, in good condition. It is extremely difficult to tell these apart from period spindle back chairs, as they are such good quality and have fantastic colour. This true set (they have not been matched together) consists of 2 armchairs and 6 side chairs. The chairs boast a prominent shaped top rail, flanked by two upright supports featuring simple finials. Below, there is a bank of refined turned spindles, secured by two horizontal bowed rails. The seats have been hand rushed and they are in good condition. The base of the chairs features lovely turned legs and a bulbous shaped stretcher to the front. The front stretcher is heavy and turned – a good sign of quality. The chairs feature twin connecting turned side stretchers and a rear stretcher; which ensures they stand firm on the ground. All chairs are made from top quality ash and elm and are firm and solid.
This design of chair originally was made in the Lancashire and Cheshire region of the North West of England, but was commonly known as a “Lancashire” chair. They were made for use in kitchens in simple country homes around the North West area during the time of the great mills in the Industrial Revolution.
They would compliment any home, especially the kitchen or dining room. They would certainly grace any home and are a great investment as they are extremely functional. So don’t miss out on your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture.
