Description:
Here is a fine quality antique English George II oak chest of drawers, circa 1740, with small proportions, in good condition. The chest is constructed with a three-plank oak top with a thumb-moulded edge, which is echoed in the base and features inset panelled oak sides. Comprising of a two-over-three graduated drawer design, the drawers boast primitive hand dovetailing and feature old replacement (most likely Georgian) brass swan neck handles and original shaped brass etched escutcheons. The bottom drawer incorporates the original working lock, with key (the key does not worth the other drawers).
The chest is constructed of solid oak, with pine lined hand-dovetailed drawer linings; it also retains its original pine backboards. The drawers are in good working order; they are clean inside and close flush to the frame. The chest stands on its original bracket feet: it is of extremely good quality and is made from the best materials; thus, it is very heavy to lift!
The chest features a rich deep oxblood oak colour, with a wonderful grain configuration to the front and sides. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.
This item would look superb in a variety of rooms, especially the bedroom. This chest of drawers would certainly grace any home. So, don’t miss out on your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture.
Condition Report:
This chest is in good condition having been cleaned and polished in our workshop. There are nominal old use marks to the top, corners and leading edges and inside of drawers, but nothing significant considering the age of the item (please see photos of top of chest). The drawers feature old replacement Georgian brass swan neck handles and the original shaped etched key escutcheons. The hand dovetailed drawers retain their original lever locks. The key only works the bottom drawer (the other drawer locks do not work). The chest benefits from a lovely deep rich original colour and patination, with a wonderful grain configuration. The chest stands on its original bracket feet and retains good quality pine backboards. The chest is of extremely good quality and is made from the best materials, thus it is very heavy to lift!
