This is a good quality and primitive small Charles I English antique oak six plank panel coffer originating from England, circa 1650 with sought after small proportions originating from a country property in Cheshire, England. The coffer features a six-plank construction with fine floral line carvings to the top, single panel sides and front. The coffer sits on its original length 8½” styles, which is very rare to see. The top of the coffer still has the original iron loop hinges visible but the lid is actually hinged with a pair of very old Georgian iron hinges. The iron striking plate and clasp are original but there is no lock or key. Part of the original iron clasp and lock is missing. The six-plank coffer has been constructed with the original handmade iron nails. The back of the coffer features the original rough-hewn back and original floor. The coffer features the original polish therefore it has a stunning rich deep colour / patination. The interior is clean, dry and the coffer is practical and useable. This is an important oak coffer having been around in the days of Charles I & II, Cromwell’s conquest of Ireland & Scotland and the Great Fire of London. The coffer would be ideal as a storage box in a bedroom in front of a bed.
This item would look great in a variety of rooms from the hallway, to the living room or bedroom in front of a bed. It has a beautiful deep rich oak patina, which has been generated by the centuries of cleaning and care it has received.
