This is a superb quality antique George III Welsh housekeeper’s oak cupboard, circa 1780 – 1810 originating from the Carmarthenshire/ Cardiganshire border area, Wales. Also known as a “Carmarthen coffer”, it has a specific regional design originating from West Wales. The cupboard itself boasts a protruding canopy, which is inlaid with satinwood and ebony above the upper section which features chamfered corner. The top section has two lovely raised and fielded Arcadian door panels with two small brass knobs and brass escutcheon. The doors have feature the original working lock and a key. Inside, it features the original shelf. Below, there is a set of three “dummy” drawers. Further below, is a set of six working drawers. The top central drawer features the original working lock and a further key. All drawers are pine lined and hand dovetailed this is typical of furniture from this period and region. The drawers also feature lovely brass knobs and escutcheons. The cupboard features the original oak top, oak backboards and lovely figured oak sides constructed with very good quality wide planks. The cupboard stands on the original Georgian bracket feet. The cupboard boasts a stunning original colour and surface patination, which can only be achieved through age and years of care and wax polishing.
The cupboard has good proportions which makes it a sought after size it was designed to fit into farmhouses with low ceilings. The cupboard dismantles into two sections for easy transport and access into the house.

Condition Report:
This item is in excellent condition. The doors and top central drawer feature the original working lock and a key. The internal oak shelf, oak sides, oak top, oak backboards, bracket feet and drawers are all original. The brass knobs are old replacements. The cupboard features the original polish, which is why the colour of this cupboard is superb. Both parts of the cupboard are original to each other. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges (which is to be expected) but nothing significant considering the age of the item. Free of woodworm, solid in joint and ready to use.
