This is a top quality antique Victorian Colonial mahogany military pistol / writing Box, circa 1840. The box boasts profuse brass bindings to the top and side of the box. Each corner features a brass corner brackets and the top is connected with brass hinges. There is brass escutcheon around the working key hole. Within the box, there are two small compartments with lids and two elongated pen compartments. Document space is provided beneath. The original lock is stamped “VR 20278 Hobbs & Co. Patent Protector, Cheap Side London”. Inside the box, the lid is stamped “Dunn & Co. Calcutta”. The box would have been commissioned for an army officer in the British Raj during the colonization of India.
This item would look great in a variety of rooms especially the office, dining room or bedroom and is an ideal place to store documents or any other possessions. It has a beautiful deep rich patina which has been generated by the years of cleaning and care it has received.
