Here is a fine quality antique English Edwardian mahogany two-seater couch, with an Art Nouveau influence, circa 1900, which is in good condition. The couch has been newly upholstered in top quality structured silk and cotton embroidered upholstery, interspersed with pink and red flowers, pale green stems on a fawn colour background, finished with fine quality braiding to the frame. The couch is constructed of mahogany and features a lovely shaped frame with a central carved fretwork pediment, with similar carvings mirrored below and scroll carvings at the ears of the top rail. The padded backrest is secured by out swept padded arms that incorporate floral carvings to the frame. The couch benefits from a sprung serpentine shaped seat; the seat is firm but comfortable; you do not sink into the seat. The seat features a simple moulded frieze and the underside is finished with traditional hessian backing. The couch is raised on cabriole front legs, with plain out swept legs to the rear. The legs terminate on the original castors.
This couch features a rich brown mahogany colour to the frame. As it boasts the original polish it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received. It is impossible to re-create this colour if it has been re-polished.
This couch would look superb in a variety of rooms from the hallway to the living room. The couch would certainly grace any home and is a great investment as it is extremely functional. So don’t miss out on your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture.
History of Art Nouveau Period:
Dating between 1896-1914, the Art Nouveau period was known for women with long hair, flowers and curves, and so is Art Nouveau furniture. The Paris Exposition of 1900 introduced furniture styles reflecting what was happening in the rest of the design world, such as jewellery and silver. This style of furniture was not warmly embraced, as the sweeping lines were not very conducive to mass production. The French however, held it in higher esteem. Legs tend to be sweeping or cabriole.
Condition Report:
This couch is in good condition. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges of the mahogany frame but nothing significant considering the age of the item. The couch has been newly upholstered in top quality structured silk and cotton embroidered upholstery, interspersed with pink and red flowers, pale green stems on a fawn colour background, finished with fine quality braiding to the frame. Therefore the upholstery is new and in excellent condition (it’s clean with no signs of wear and tear or damage). The seat is firmly sprung, but at the same time, is extremely comfortable. The underside is upholstered in traditional hessian. As the couch boasts the original polish it has a fantastic colour and patination. This colour can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received. The back and arms are also in good condition with no loose joints, and no missing carvings. This couch is well constructed, solid in joint and is ready to use.
