Description:
This is a good quality period antique ash & elm single country farmhouse spindle-back rush seated kitchen-dining chair, circa 1790, boasting stunning colour and patination, in good condition. The chair boasts a prominent shaped, scribe moulded top rail, consisting of ‘ears’ on either side and supported on both sides by upright supports. Below are two banks of refined turned spindles, secured by two horizontal bowed rails. The seat has been hand rushed and is in good condition. The base of the chair features lovely turned legs and a bulbous shaped stretcher to the front. The front stretcher is heavy and turned – a good sign of quality. The chair features twin turned side stretchers and a rear stretcher; which ensures the chair stands firm on the ground. The chair is made from top quality ash and elm, and is strong and solid.
This design of chair was originally made in the Lancashire and Cheshire region of the North West of England, but was commonly known as a “Lancashire” chair. They were made for use in kitchens in simple country homes around the North West area during the time of the great mills in the Industrial Revolution.
This chair exhibits a rich warm brown colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.

This chair is in good condition. The chair features a good quality hand woven rush seat, which is in good condition. Importantly, there are no breaks to the legs or back of the chair. The chair has a lovely warm colour and patination. It has a fantastic colour and patination. The kitchen chair is heavy in weight, which is a good sign of quality. The chair is well constructed, solid in joint, sits firm on the ground and is ready to use.
