Description:
Here is a fine quality antique English Victorian desk chair, from the aesthetic movement, constructed of solid mahogany with a newly upholstered green upholstered backrest and removable swab cushion, circa 1880, in excellent condition. The design of the office chair is influenced by the Aesthetic movement; this is evident in the elegant fretwork panels around the desk chair frame. The mahogany office chair benefits from a curved, deep-buttoned padded backrest, secured to wraparound upholstered arms, supported by two shaped back supports and two turned arm supports. The Victorian desk chair includes a removable zipped upholstered leather cushion, which sits atop the elegant mahogany saddle shaped seat. The Victorian office chair has been newly upholstered to a professional standard in top quality full grain sage green leather, finished with hand-tacked brass studs to the perimeter. The office chair is extremely comfortable to sit on. The chair frame has also been cleaned and French polished, by hand, to a professional standard, therefore the colour and patination are of an excellent standard. This beautiful revolving chair sits on four splayed mahogany cabriole legs, terminating on English-made solid brass & porcelain castors. The swivel chair rotates 360 degrees and the mechanism runs smoothly. The Victorian desk chair mechanism is in excellent working order, having been cleaned and serviced.
This swivel chair boasts a rich mellow mahogany colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received. This Victorian desk chair would look superb in a variety of rooms in the home, especially the office or study as it is so comfortable. This item would certainly grace any home. So, don’t miss out on your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture.
The Aesthetic Movement
Aestheticism (also the Aesthetic movement) was an art movement in the late 19th century which privileged the aesthetic value of literature, music and the arts over their socio-political functions. According to Aestheticism, art should be produced to be beautiful, rather than to serve a moral, allegorical, or other didactic purpose, a sentiment exemplified by the slogan “art for art’s sake.” Aestheticism originated in 1860s England with a radical group of artists and designers, including William Morris and Dante Gabriel Rossetti. It flourished in the 1870s and 1880s, gaining prominence and the support of notable writers such as Walter Pater and Oscar Wilde. Aestheticism challenged the values of mainstream Victorian culture, as many Victorians believed that literature and art fulfilled important ethical roles. Writing in The Guardian, Fiona McCarthy states that “the aesthetic movement stood in stark and sometimes shocking contrast to the crass materialism of Britain in the 19th century.” Aestheticism was named by the critic Walter Hamilton in The Aesthetic Movement in England in 1882. By the 1890s, decadence, a term with origins in common with aestheticism, was in use across Europe. (Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aestheticism)
