Here is a fine example of an antique French Rococo carved solid mahogany couch, circa 1880, which would benefit from being re-upholstered. Displaying a stunning triple arched design, with superb quality floral pierced carvings, the frame sweeps down onto padded arms, which terminate on moulded scroll knuckles, above finely shaped cabriole legs and original brass castors. The comfortable sprung seat incorporates a serpentine design, above a moulded mahogany frieze and a curved padded backrest. The up-swept arms and backrest are solid in joint. The couch stands on its original length solid mahogany cabriole legs. This couch has been well constructed, with fine quality mahogany timbers and it is solid in joint.
The couch is upholstered in pink tapestry upholstery with matching braiding. It would benefit from being re-upholstered; as it’s faded in places, with some marks and wear. It would therefore make an ideal upholstery project. We offer an upholstery service and we could upholster the couch in your own fabric for an additional cost of £350. The upholstery quote does not include the fabric; you would need to choose or supply the fabric (we estimate 8 – 10 metres).
This couch features a rich brown mahogany colour. As it boasts the original polish it has a fantastic mellow colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received. It is impossible to re-create this colour if it has been re-polished.
This couch would look superb in a variety of rooms from the living room to the conservatory. It would certainly grace any home and is a great investment as it is extremely functional. So don’t miss out your chance to own a lovely set of furniture.
Provenance – Rococo:
Rococo was an 18th-century artistic movement and style, which affected several aspects of the arts including painting, sculpture, architecture, interior design, decoration, literature, music and theatre. It takes its name from the French rocaille (pronounced ‘rock-eye’), which means the rock or broken shell motifs that often formed part of the designs. The Rococo developed in the early part of the 18th century in Paris, France as a reaction against the grandeur symmetry and strict regulations of the Baroque, especially that of the Palace of Versailles. The Rococo style was used primarily in furniture, silver and ceramics, rather than architecture.
Condition Report:
The upholstery shows signs of general fading, wear and small marks across the seat back and arms. The padding in the backrest needs replacing. The couch would therefore benefit from being re-upholstered, as the existing upholstery is tired. The advertised price reflects the fact that it is being sold for-upholstery and its current condition. We offer an upholstery service and we could upholster the couch in your own fabric for an additional cost of £350. The upholstery quote does not include the fabric; you would need to choose / supply the fabric (we estimate 8 – 10 metres). The seat is strung and extremely comfortable. The frame, arms and legs are well constructed and solid in joint, having been constructed from solid mahogany. The couch retains its original brass castors. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges of the frame but nothing significant considering the age of the item. As the couch boasts the original polish it has a fantastic colour and patination to the wood overall. This colour can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received. It is impossible to re-create this colour if it has been re-polished.
