Description:
This is a fine antique Victorian Oriental ebony inlaid opium / coffee table, incorporating a glass top, with delightful small proportions, circa 1840, in good original condition. The table boasts a glass top, covering a beautiful profusely inlaid surface, depicting a traditional scene of three women and two children at the shore of a lake. The scene also includes a red fence, a tree and other flowers & plants, as well as rocks, with mountains and a building across the lake in the distance, and a pair of grebes swimming in the lake. Different materials have been used for different colours of inlay: coral has been used for pink & red hues; bone for cream and off-white detail; agate has been used for green & grey tones; mother-of-pearl has also been used in places, and papier maché forms the trunk of the tree to the left of the scene. Further detailing has been achieved with green, blue, red & gold paint. The outer edge of the top displays thin red painted trim, above a moulded frieze, which boasts further painted detailing, including gold patterned detail, as well as stylised roosters and further thin red trim. The table is raised on block cabriole legs, which depict painted, highly stylised dragons. This table boasts exquisite detail and range of colours & tones. The table is well made, solid in joint and ready to use.
The table boasts a black ebony colour. It has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.
This table would look superb in a variety of rooms, especially in the living room as a coffee table. The table would certainly grace any home or office and is a great investment, as it is extremely functional. So, don’t miss out on your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture.
