This is an example of an unusual, rare and exceptionally good quality antique Victorian Anglo Indian Colonial mahogany hallstand, circa 1880, in excellent condition, with an ebonised finish. The stand boasts a top quality central barley twist spine, capped by a finial, with two lower circular discs. The top disk features three large coat hooks and the smaller disk features 7 small coat hooks. The central spine is flanked by two smaller barley twist upright supports connected by a carved rail, which is designed to help support walking sticks and umbrellas. The base houses a tin metal drip dray, with side handles, that can be removed. The drip tray sits within an elegant spindle gallery. The hallstand sits upon four elegant carved splayed feet, which firmly support the item on the ground. This is a one-piece hallstand.
This item features an ebonised colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.
This item would look superb in the hallway of any house or office. This item would certainly grace any home and is a great investment, as it is extremely functional. So don’t miss out on your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture.
Condition Report:
The item is in excellent condition. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges but nothing significant considering the age of the item. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination, similar to an ebonised finish. Importantly, there are no missing hooks or hook knobs. There are also no breaks to the arms / hooks (which is very common with these types of hallstands). This is a single piece hallstand. This item is well constructed, solid in joint and ready to use.
Provenance:
This item dates from the late Victorian period and would have been commissioned either for a member of the British Raj or the British Military in Colonial India in the late Victorian period. As this is an exceptionally good quality and ornate hallstand, it was most likely built for a person / family of high social status or a high-ranking officer.
